Today marks the forty-fourth anniversary of the fifth hunger striker to die, Joe McDonnell. Below we link to a documentary by Ocean FM about Joe’s death which won the Silver Award in the prestigious International New York Festivals Radio Awards in 2022. The documentary was produced and presented by Niall Delaney.
Ocean FM is a local radio station that broadcasts to parts of the northwest of Ireland and covers south County Donegal, north County Leitrim, most of County Sligo and parts of south-west County Fermanagh.
Delany’s interviews and archival material include the voices of Joe’s family: his wife Goretti and daughter Bernadette; his sister Eilish and brother Paul; republicans Owen Carron, Gerry Adams, Dermot McNally, Sean McManus, Michael Colreavy, and the late Brendan ‘Bik’ McFarlane.
